The instinct when furnishing a bedroom is to buy the suite — bed, two nightstands and a dresser, same finish, same catalogue page, one delivery. It is the fastest route to a finished room and it is also the fastest route to a room that looks like a hotel. Matching every piece removes the only thing that makes a bedroom read as somebody's: the evidence that the pieces were chosen one at a time.

What follows is the sizing a bedroom actually needs, and then the argument for buying it in parts.

Mattress sizes, and what the frame adds

US mattress dimensions are fixed, and everything else in the room is measured against them.

Twin is 38 by 75 inches. Full is 54 by 75. Queen is 60 by 80. King is 76 by 80. California King is 72 by 84 — narrower than a standard king and four inches longer, which matters only if someone is over about six foot two.

The frame is not the mattress. A bed frame adds roughly 2 to 5 inches on each side and 3 to 6 inches at the foot, depending on how thick the rails and the footboard are. An upholstered frame adds the most, because the padding sits outside the structure. So a queen bed that is 60 inches of mattress is usually 65 to 70 inches of furniture, and that is the number to measure the room against.

Clearance, and what actually fits

Leave 24 inches minimum on any side of the bed someone walks down, 30 inches to be comfortable. Below 24 you turn sideways to get past, which is the single most common complaint about a bedroom that looked fine on a floor plan.

A dresser needs 36 inches of clear floor in front of it to open the bottom drawer fully and stand there while you do it. This is the measurement people forget, because the dresser fits against the wall and the problem only appears after it is in place.

A 9 by 10-foot room is the useful worst case. A queen frame at roughly 68 inches wide leaves about 24 inches on one side and 20 on the other if you centre it — so it takes one nightstand, not two, and the dresser goes on the facing wall or not at all. A king does not fit a 9 by 10 room with anything else in it.

The bed sets the room, so it is specified first. An upholstered bed gives a headboard you can sit against without a pillow behind you, which is the difference between a bed you read in and one you only sleep in — the Camilla, available in four colourways in both queen and king, and the Madagascar Platform Bed are the two ends of that range. Where floor space is the constraint rather than budget, a bed with storage puts drawers under the mattress and removes the need for a chest entirely; the Joan Storage Bed comes in three colourways in both sizes.

Beside it, a narrow nightstand is the piece most often bought wrong — too short, too deep, or too wide for the gap. The Enya Nightstand in natural or red oak is the straightforward answer, and the Loren sits in the same family as the Loren dresser if you want two pieces that agree without the whole room matching.

For folded storage, a modern dresser is the long low option and a chest is the tall narrow one — the Sadie 9 Drawer Dresser and the Gibson 6 Drawer are the former, the Eleanor 5 Drawer Chest the latter. Pick by wall length, not by capacity: a dresser that overhangs its wall looks wrong no matter how much it holds.

At the foot of the bed, a storage bench for bedroom takes the things that otherwise live on the chair in the corner — the Gemma Storage Bench in three colourways and the Ichigo are both lift-top. If the storage is not needed, a boucle bench does the same visual job with less bulk; the Wyatt Leather Bench and the Verity Bench are the two weights available.

Nightstand and dresser proportions

A nightstand should finish within 2 to 4 inches of the top of the mattress — level or slightly below, never above. Measure to the mattress, not to the headboard, because that is the surface you reach across in the dark. Standard mattress-top height sits between 24 and 28 inches, so most nightstands land in that band.

Width wants 18 to 24 inches, and at least 20 beside a queen, or the piece looks stranded. Depth should not exceed the depth of the bed frame; a nightstand that projects past the bed catches hips.

Dressers run 30 to 36 inches tall, which puts the top surface at a usable height for a lamp or a tray without blocking a mirror hung above it. A six-drawer is usually 52 to 64 inches wide and 18 to 20 deep.

How to build a bedroom that is not a suite

Match two pieces, not five. The reliable method is to let the bed and one other item share a finish, then deliberately break the pattern on everything else — a different timber on the nightstands, a fabric bench at the foot, metal on the lamp bases. The room reads as collected rather than ordered.

Three families in this range make that easy, because each exists as more than one piece: Madagascar is a platform bed and a dresser, Watson is a bed and a four-drawer dresser, and Rye is a bed and a six-drawer dresser. Colin covers a twin bed and a storage bed, and Loren covers a nightstand and a dresser. Use one pairing for the anchor and choose the rest on their own merits.

The one rule worth keeping strict: keep the timber tones either clearly the same or clearly different. Two walnuts that nearly match is the combination that reads as a mistake; walnut against black, or walnut against oak, reads as a decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

A queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. The bed frame is wider: allow 2 to 5 inches on each side for rails, and more for an upholstered frame, so a queen bed usually occupies 65 to 70 inches of floor width. Measure the room against the frame, not the mattress.

Start with the wall, not the capacity. Measure the usable wall length and keep the dresser inside it, then check you have 36 inches of clear floor in front to open the bottom drawer. Height should sit between 30 and 36 inches. A long low dresser suits a wide wall; a tall chest suits a narrow one.

A bed, one or two nightstands, and one piece of closed storage. That is the whole list for most rooms. A bench at the foot of the bed is the only genuinely useful addition, because it takes the clothes that otherwise end up on a chair. Anything beyond that is usually filling space rather than solving a problem.

Place the bed first, on the longest uninterrupted wall, and centre it so both sides have walking room. Leave 24 inches minimum on each walking side, 30 to be comfortable. Nightstands go next, then the dresser on the facing wall with 36 inches of clearance in front. Everything else fits around those three.

Two pieces, not five. Let the bed share a finish with one other item, then break the pattern deliberately on the rest. The rule worth keeping strict is that timber tones should be clearly the same or clearly different — two walnuts that nearly match is the combination that reads as a mistake.
