A dining table that seats six on the product page seats four in a real room. The number quoted by most retailers is the number of chairs that physically touch the table, not the number of people who can eat at it with their elbows down and a serving dish in the middle. That gap is the single most common reason a dining table gets replaced within two years.

So this page is organized the way the decision is actually made: how many people, what shape fits the room, and only then what it is made of.

How many people a dining table really seats

Allow 24 inches of table edge per person. That is the working figure every furniture specifier uses, and it is the one the marketing copy quietly ignores. Below 22 inches people are touching arms; above 26 you are wasting table.

Round tables

Measure the circumference, not the diameter, then divide by 24. A 47-inch round table gives roughly 148 inches of edge, which is four comfortable seats and a tight five — the Otago 47 In Round Dining Table is this size. A 60-inch round gives about 188 inches, so six comfortably and eight only if nobody needs an armrest. Round tables have no head of the table, which is why they suit conversation and small square rooms better than any other shape.

Rectangular tables

A 72-inch rectangular table seats six — three a side, nobody on the ends. Put people on the ends and you need 84 inches before the corner seats stop clashing with the side seats. At 96 inches you are seating eight properly or ten at a push. The Godenza Rectangular Dining Table and the Bent Dining Table, which runs from extra small through to large, cover most of that range.

Oval tables

Oval is the compromise most people should make and almost nobody considers. It gives close to the seating capacity of a rectangle of the same length, but the rounded ends remove the two corners that make a narrow room feel tight. The Otago Oval Dining Table is the obvious example in this range.

The clearance nobody measures until it is too late

Leave 36 inches between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture — that is the minimum for pulling a chair out and sitting down. Make it 48 inches on any side someone has to walk past while others are seated. A 72-inch table therefore needs a room at least 144 inches across in that direction before it stops being a squeeze. Measure the room before you fall in love with the table, not after.

Shop dining room furniture by category

Start with the surface, because its length and shape decide everything that follows — the dining tables are where the seat count is actually set. Once the length is fixed, the seating divides into two decisions rather than one. A modern dining chair gives every person a back and defined space, which matters at a table people sit at for two hours; most are sold here in sets of two, so a six-seat table takes three.

The alternative along one side is dining benches, which seat more bodies per inch and slide fully under the table when the room has to be walked through — the Post Large Dining Bench and the Lila Dining Bench are the straightforward versions. This collection also holds the Fable Slipcover Dining Banquette in L-shape and U-shape, from 96 up to 168 inches, which is the right answer for a breakfast nook where two walls are already doing the work of two chairs.

Away from the table, sideboards and credenzas carry the serving surface and the storage that stops a dining room becoming a corridor with a table in it — the Mako Sideboard, Fishbone Sideboard and Casey Sideboard sit at different widths for that. For drinks and glassware, the wine storage cabinet range is currently the Mako Bar Cabinet, a 71-inch floor-standing cabinet with glass shelving rather than a rolling cart.

Counter height and bar height, and why the difference matters

Standard dining height is 30 inches and takes an 18-inch chair seat. Counter height is 36 inches and takes a 24 to 26-inch stool. Bar height is 42 inches and takes a 29 to 30-inch stool. Mixing these by even two inches leaves people perched or hunched, and it is the most common ordering error in this category.

A counter height dining table suits an open-plan kitchen where the table lines up with a worktop — the Carrie Counter Table and Godenza Counter Table are both at 36 inches. Match it with a counter height stool at 24 to 26 inches, such as the Owing Barstool or the Freeman Barstool, and check the seat height rather than the product name, because "barstool" is used loosely across the whole industry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fix the table first, because its length and shape decide the seat count and everything else in the room. Measure for 24 inches of table edge per person and 36 inches of clearance behind the chairs. Only once those two numbers work should you choose material, finish and style.

Six comfortably, eight at a squeeze. A 60-inch round table has roughly 188 inches of edge, and at the working figure of 24 inches per person that gives just under eight seats — but eight leaves no room for serving dishes or elbows. Plan for six.

A dining set is a table sold together with matching chairs, usually four or six, as a single purchase. The pieces in this collection are specified individually instead, so the table and the seating are chosen separately and do not have to match exactly.

Put the budget into the table. It is the piece that takes twenty years of daily use, and a solid timber or stone top can be refinished when chairs cannot. Chairs and benches are the sensible place to economise, or to replace later as a household changes.

A table, seating for the number of people who actually eat there, and one piece of storage. The storage is the item most often skipped and most often missed — a sideboard carries serving dishes and linen and stops the table becoming the permanent surface for everything else.
