Outdoor furniture fails in one of three places: the frame, the fabric, or the finish. Most of what gets sold as patio furniture is powder-coated steel wrapped around a foam cushion, and it looks exactly as good as it is ever going to look on the day it arrives. Everything in this collection is specified the other way round — materials chosen for what weather does to them over years, not for what they cost to ship.

That means teak, rope, powder-coated aluminium and cast stone. Each behaves differently outdoors, and the right one depends less on taste than on where the piece will actually sit.

Outdoor furniture materials, and what each one does over time

Teak

Teak is the reference material for outdoor furniture because of its own oil content, which is why it is the one wood that can be left uncovered and simply rinsed down. Left alone it weathers from honey to silver-grey over roughly nine months. That colour shift is cosmetic — the timber underneath is unaffected — but it is effectively permanent unless the piece is oiled from the first season. Decide which look you want before that first summer, not after.

Rope and marine cord

Rope-wrapped frames have replaced wicker across most contemporary outdoor ranges, and for good reason: synthetic marine-grade cord does not split, does not trap water inside a weave the way natural rattan does, and holds its colour under UV. It also softens an outdoor scheme that is otherwise all hard surfaces.

Powder-coated aluminium

Aluminium is the practical answer for anything that gets moved. It will not rust at the welds the way steel does, and it is light enough to reposition single-handed. It is the frame to choose for a balcony or a rooftop where every piece has to shift for cleaning.

Cast stone and concrete

Stone and concrete pieces are specified for permanence rather than convenience. They are heavy by design, which is exactly the point on an exposed terrace where lighter tables travel in the wind.

Seating is where an outdoor scheme is decided, and the piece that sets the scale is the outdoor sectional sofa — it fixes the footprint everything else has to work around, so it is worth placing first and buying once. Where a full seating group would crowd the space, an outdoor chaise lounge does the same job for one person in a fraction of the floor area, which is why it suits poolside and narrow terraces better.

Dining outdoors needs the surface and the seats specified together. Start with the outdoor dining tables, because the top material dictates the weight and the weight dictates whether the table stays where you put it, then match outdoor dining chairs to it — allow 24 inches of table edge per seat and 36 inches of clearance behind each chair, or the table will seat two fewer people than the spec sheet claims.

Around the seating, an outdoor side table is the piece that makes a lounge group usable rather than decorative, and it is the item most often left out of a first order. The flexible option is outdoor benches — they pull up to a dining table when there are more people than chairs, and sit against a wall as a landing surface when there are not.

How to choose outdoor furniture for your space

Measure the space with the furniture in it, not empty. A seating group needs 18 inches between the sofa edge and the coffee table, and a clear walking route of at least 30 inches around the outside. On a balcony, check the access route before the dimensions of the piece itself — the lift, the stairwell turn, the door width — because outdoor frames are usually delivered assembled.

Then be honest about exposure. A fully covered loggia will take almost anything. A west-facing roof terrace with no shade is the hardest environment furniture ever sees, and it is where material choice stops being an aesthetic decision and starts being the whole decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mild soap and warm water on a soft brush handles almost everything. Work in shade so the solution does not dry on the surface, rinse thoroughly, and let the piece dry fully before replacing cushions. Avoid pressure washers on teak and on rope — they lift the wood grain and fray the cord. Twice a year is enough for most pieces.

Start with exposure, not style. Decide whether the piece will be covered, partly shaded or fully open, because that rules out materials before you ever look at a photograph. Then measure the space with clearance included. Style is the last decision, not the first — a beautiful piece in the wrong material is a two-season purchase.

Teak and powder-coated aluminium outlast everything else in normal use. Teak handles sun, rain and frost without treatment and can be sanded back decades later. Aluminium will not rust at the joints, which is where steel furniture fails first. Cast stone outlasts both, but it is effectively permanent once positioned.

Solid teak frames, properly joined, routinely last twenty years or more outdoors. The limiting factor is almost never the frame — it is the cushion. Buy the frame for the long term and treat cushions and covers as items you will replace once or twice across that life.

Do nothing and it silvers; oil it once or twice a year and it stays honey-coloured. Neither is wrong. Wash with soapy water and a soft brush as needed. If it has already greyed and you want the colour back, a teak cleaner followed by light sanding will restore it — but commit to oiling afterwards, or it will silver again.
