Two mistakes account for almost every wall in a home that looks not-quite-right. The art is hung too high, and it was bought too small. Both are easy to avoid and almost impossible to fix later without filling holes, which is why the measurements below come before anything else on this page.

How big the piece should be

Scale is decided by the furniture underneath, not by the wall. A piece that is correct for the sofa will look correct on any wall; a piece chosen for the wall alone almost never does.

Above a sofa

The artwork should be about two-thirds the width of the sofa. An 84-inch sofa takes roughly 56 inches of art — one large piece, or a group measured edge to edge as if it were one. Anything under half the sofa width reads as an afterthought no matter how good the piece is.

Above a bed

Match the headboard rather than the mattress. Art above a bed should be roughly the width of the headboard, or two-thirds to three-quarters of the bed width where there is no headboard. A king bed takes 48 to 60 inches of art; a queen takes 40 to 50.

Above a console or sideboard

Narrower than the furniture, never wider. Two-thirds to three-quarters of the console width is the working range, which keeps the console reading as the base and the piece above it as the thing being supported.

How high to hang it

The centre of the piece sits 57 to 60 inches from the floor. This is gallery standard and it is not a matter of taste — it is average adult eye level, and it is why museum hangs feel comfortable and domestic hangs often do not. Most people hang 6 to 10 inches higher than this, usually because they are standing up while they decide.

Over furniture the floor measurement gives way to a gap measurement: leave 6 to 12 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame, with 8 inches the safe default. Any more and the two stop reading as a pair; any less and the piece looks like it is resting on the sofa back.

One practical note: anything over about 20 pounds needs a stud or a proper wall anchor, not a picture hook. Cast aluminium and bronze pieces are heavier than they look.

Shop wall decor by category

The default choice is framed wall art, and the range here runs from quiet to loud — the Two Cranes and Grasslands Framed Paintings at the restrained end, Impression in its Terra and Verdant palettes at the other, and Briar Framed Print On Linen for a surface with some texture to it. Frames and paintings are the easiest pieces to scale correctly because they come in a spread of sizes.

A large wall mirror does something no painting can: it returns light to a room and makes a wall read as depth rather than surface. The Foundry family covers this at three sizes and in black, gold and white, and the Alcott comes as a large round, a small round and an oval — which is unusual, and useful when the same shape is wanted at two scales in one room. For a floor-standing piece, the Kai, Figaro, Hughes and Orchard mirrors all lean rather than hang.

Where a wall needs relief rather than an image, wall sculpture art is the third option, and the one most people forget. The Breton Cast Aluminum Wall Sculpture arrives as a set of three and the Alva as a set of four, which means they are hung as a composition rather than a single object — that makes them easier to scale to a large wall than one framed piece would be. The Bode in aged brass and the Coro in antique bronze are the single-object versions.

One statement piece, or a gallery wall

A single large piece is the safer decision and usually the better one. It takes one hole, it scales by the rules above, and it does not need rebalancing every time something is added.

If a gallery wall is the goal, treat the whole group as one rectangle and size that rectangle by the sofa or headboard rule — the individual frames are irrelevant to the scaling. Keep 2 to 3 inches between smaller frames and 3 to 5 inches between larger ones, lay the arrangement out on the floor first, and keep the gaps consistent even when the frames are not. A set of three or four sculptures, like the Breton or the Alva, is effectively a pre-solved gallery wall.

Where mirrors go, and why

A mirror opposite a window doubles the daylight in a room; a mirror opposite a blank wall doubles the blank wall. That is the whole rule, and it is the one most often ignored in favour of hanging the mirror where there happens to be space.

A full-length mirror needs to be at least 60 inches tall for a person to see themselves head to toe from a normal standing distance, and leaning one against the wall rather than hanging it is both safer with heavy glass and more forgiving if the floor is uneven. Above a console, the mirror follows the same two-thirds rule as artwork.

Frequently Asked Questions

Match the headboard, not the mattress. Art above a bed should be roughly the width of the headboard, or two-thirds to three-quarters of the bed width where there is no headboard. A king bed takes 48 to 60 inches of art and a queen takes 40 to 50, measured across the whole arrangement if more than one piece is used.

About two-thirds the width of the sofa. An 84-inch sofa takes roughly 56 inches of art, measured edge to edge across the whole group if it is more than one piece. Leave 6 to 12 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame, with 8 inches as the safe default.

Hang so the centre of the piece sits 57 to 60 inches from the floor, which is average adult eye level. Most people hang too high because they decide while standing. Anything over about 20 pounds needs a stud or a proper anchor rather than a picture hook, and cast metal pieces are heavier than they look.

Treat a group as one rectangle and size that rectangle by the furniture below it — the individual frames do not matter to the scaling. Keep 2 to 3 inches between smaller frames and 3 to 5 inches between larger ones, lay it out on the floor first, and keep the gaps consistent even when the frames are not.

One large piece rather than several small ones, and at least one mirror. Small pieces scattered across a wall make a room read as busier and therefore smaller, while a single correctly scaled piece does the opposite. A mirror placed opposite a window adds usable daylight, which matters more in a small room than in a large one.
